Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrives in Kolkata for a two-day visit focused on strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. During his visit, Shah is scheduled to address a large meeting of BJP workers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. This meeting is viewed as a key organizational event to outline the party’s strategy for the upcoming elections.
The visit comes at a time when the Bengal BJP is facing internal challenges alongside external political pressures. Party sources confirmed that all levels of party workers, from mandal to district and state units, have been directed to participate in the meeting. West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar formally confirmed the event and emphasized the mandatory participation of party workers.
Notable leaders such as Sukanta Majumdar and Suvendu Adhikari are expected to attend the meeting. However, Dilip Ghosh was reportedly not invited. The decision to exclude Ghosh highlights ongoing factional divisions within the state BJP. The meeting is scheduled on the day of the traditional Bengali festival ‘Jamai Shashti,’ a symbolic occasion for the party’s leadership to mark the start of their electoral preparations.
There were initial disagreements within the Bengal BJP regarding the timing of Amit Shah’s visit. One faction preferred to postpone it, while another considered it urgent. After multiple rounds of discussions between the central and state leadership, a consensus was reached to proceed with the visit as planned on June 1.
The primary objectives of the meeting are to boost the morale of party workers, formulate a clear election strategy, and address internal organizational unity. The BJP leadership intends to use this event as a platform to reinforce the party’s readiness for the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal.
